In January 2014, PIKO announced two new US style flat cars, which were the first American freight cars to appear outside their ‘Mainline Series‘ range. Later in 2014, two new tank cars were announced as well, which were based on these flat cars.
PIKO further expanded their American freight car range in 2015 with high-side gondolas, work cabooses and container cars – all based on the flat cars as well.
At the beginning of this year, PIKO announced some more variants, including the #38719 D&RGW stake car set in this review.
A separate review of both the tank car and high-side gondola will follow soon (which will be linked at the end of this review, once available).
Great packaging, as always.
You will need to attach most of the stakes to the flat cars yourself. If you’re the type of person that stores his/her rolling stock in boxes after every running session, you may find this a bit annoying. I don’t really care, I even prefer having a single box for both cars as it saves a bit of storage space…
The flat cars have a slightly different colour. I was not aware of it when I bought the set, but I like it.
The stakes come in two plastic bags, a brake wheel is also supplied.
Here’s the first stake car, with road number 6405.
Sharp lettering, very nice.
The brake wheel, grab irons and steps are a very bright, white colour. They are easily removable so you can apply some darker paint if you wish to do so.
The stake cars come with hook and loop couplers. I’m not sure if these cars allow for an easy conversion to Kadee (body mounted) couplers, but I’ll definitely try it out and report back…
An interesting deck design. I Googled some images to find out if this design had a special name, but I couldn’t find much useful info. I did find some pictures of similar flat cars, so I assume this design is prototypical.
The stakes need to be pressed down firmly into the stake pockets to attach them properly.
Nice wood imitation deck.
Bettendorf trucks, with plastic wheels.
A nice amount of detail on the frame.
Want to disassemble the flat car? There are two screws in the center, and three on each end (you will need to remove the trucks / bogies first).
The other stake car carries road number 6410, and is a slighty darker shade of brown.
The D&RGW flat car set from PIKO is a nice addition to their range of American items. Since I already owned a Rio Grande ‘Mogul’ locomotive and four yellow D&RGW wood coaches, I figured a few freight cars to add to my US collection would be nice.
PIKO’s G scale stake cars look good, and are well-made. If you enjoy PIKO’s Mogul locomotives, you should definitely get a nice rake of these flat cars as well. PIKO is further expanding this range with tank cars, gondolas, bulkhead flat cars & more, so there will be plenty of models to choose from.
The MSRP of this pack of 2 cars lies at € 99, which is great value for money – especially when compared to buying a single flat car (e.g. #38700, #38710) which is listed at € 81 MSRP.
