PIKO G 38715 High-Side Gondola D&RGW

American high-side gondolas from PIKO, as of 2015:

  • 38704 High-Side Gondola SF
  • 38715 High-Side Gondola D&RGW

Review:

PIKO announced two high-side gondolas in January 2015, one in a Santa Fe paint scheme (#38704) and one in a D&RGW paint scheme – which is reviewed here.

Great packaging, although it could be a bit smaller in my opinion. These boxes take up SO much storage space…

The high-side gondolas are built upon PIKO’s flat cars, which I reviewed earlier (linked at the end of this review).

Yep, looks good.

I quite like the colour.

Nicely detailed ends, with separately moulded brake wheel, grab irons and steps.

Hook and loop couplers are installed by default. I’m not sure if fitting Kadee (body mounted) knuckles will be possible without too much modifications… I will try it out, and report back.

Sharp lettering, nice.

The white ‘Rio Grande’ letters look a bit faded, but I can assure you that’s not the case. Just a bad picture…

Sharp lettering on the chassis as well.

A nice wood imitation on the inside of the gondola as well! You don’t see this very often, kudos to PIKO.

Arch bar trucks, with plastic wheels.

A nice amount of detail on the frame.

One more surprise…

By removing the end panels of the gondola, longer loads can be carried. According to a video from PIKO America, the D&RGW used these gondolas to carry oil pipes in its later years.

You can of course remove the sides as well, leaving you with a flat car.

Conclusion:

The gondola car is another nice addition to PIKO’s G scale American range. The gondola is well-made, nicely detailed and it runs well. Although it is not an exact replica of the Rio Grande prototype, but more of a freelance design, it still looks ‘believable’ – and to me, that’s the most important thing.
