First impression: nice!

The tank car is built upon PIKO’s standard flat car, which I reviewed earlier (linked at the end of this review).

Hook and loop couplers are installed by default. I’m not sure if fitting Kadee (body mounted) knuckles will be possible without too much modifications… I will try it out, and report back.

The grab irons and steps are separately moulded.

The UTLX tank car carries road number 52015. I hope more road numbers will be available in the future.

The ‘Gramps Oil’ company leased a number of tank cars from UTLX to move oil from their oil field. Fun fact: Lafayette Hughes – ‘Gramps Oil’ owner – reportedly had the cars painted ‘Gramps’ so that his grandchildren knew which cars belonged to their grandfather.

Conclusion:

PIKO’s G scale tank car is another nice addition to their American range. The tank car is well-made, nicely detailed and it runs well. Although – I believe – it is not an exact replica of tank cars that ran on the D&RGW railroad, it still looks ‘believable’. I hope more road numbers will become available for the D&RGW ‘Gramps’ design, so I can get a nice rake of these tankers to run behind my Rio Grande ‘Mogul’ locomotive.
