PIKO offers wheelsets in both plastic and metal, with various diameters. I’ve listed them all here: PIKO G Wheels. In this review, I’ll take a closer look at the 30 mm chromed wheels.
Article Number: 36164
Product Description: Metal wheelset, chromed (2 pcs.)
Diameter: 30 mm
Weight: 61 g
MSRP (2015): € 23,99
The wheels come in a pack of two.
The wheels appear to be full metal. With a diameter of 30 mm, the wheels are slightly smaller than LGB wheels (31 mm).
The wheels are chromed, which gives them a shiny look.
The axles are much thicker near the flanges. I’m not sure why they designed the axle like this, as it’s not very prototypical. Maybe to increase the weight even more?
I’ve added the wheels to the tender of my Rio Grande Mogul. They look good, and run very well.
The metal wheels from PIKO look good, and run well as they are quite heavy. The MSRP lies at € 23,99 per set of two axles. Even though street prices usually are lower, these wheels still are (too?) expensive. There’s nothing wrong with these wheelsets, it’s just that other manufacturers offer the same thing for a lower price…
