In an other review, I compared the G scale switch drives from LGB and PIKO. In addition to PIKO’s switch drive, I bought PIKO’s #35266 switch lantern to go with it. So I took some pictures of the switch lantern for a review as well.
I once tried out LGB’s switch lantern, which I never got it to work properly. I read other people had trouble getting them to work as well. Maybe I missed something, or maybe there’s a simple ‘trick’ to get them working, but I never managed it, unfortunately.
So I hope I have better luck with PIKO’s switch lantern! 😉

The switch lantern can be attached to either side of a switch, and therefore they provide both a left and a right lantern. A small screw is also included to attach the switch lantern to the switch drive unit.
The switch lantern works on PIKO’s switch drive only, it does NOT fit LGB switch drives.
How does it work? As the throw bar slides to move the switch, it is also sliding in/out of the lantern box. Inside the lantern box it attaches to a mechanism that spins the lantern.
Installation is easy, and described in detail in the manual. However, the manual mentions some kind of spring element inside the switch lantern, which my unit did not have. Either that went missing (my mistake), it was never installed in the factory (their mistake), or the manual is not up-to-date with how the lantern is being shipped out.
The power source requirements for the LED light are listed in the manual.
PIKO recommends to remove this small spring from the switch if you use the switch lantern.
The end result:
It looks good, and works well. Even without the ‘missing’ spring, it works perfectly fine.
A short demo video:
PIKO’s switch lantern is a nice add-on for your layout, and works well. The missing spring is a mystery to me, but the switch lantern performs reliably regardless. And unlike LGB’s switch lantern, I actually got this one to work properly! 😉
