LGB 40030 HSB Freight Car Set

Review:

A set of three freight cars, which comes in three seperate boxes. One would expect a single box for all three cars… Why bother offering them in a set if they are in seperate boxes anyway? Of course, to trick people into buying three cars instead of maybe just one or two…

I’m not off to a good start here, am I? Let’s get to business, and start unboxing.

The first gondola. In HSB livery, with road number 99-03-10.

The usual LGB box with cardboard inlay and a piece of foam to prevent the car from flying around.

The set comes with a small leaflet with a list of spare parts, and a second coupler hook for each car.

All three gondola cars lined up. The two HSB freight cars are very similar, the DR one is significantly different.

Road numbers 99-03-10 and 99-03-33.

Looking good.

The freight cars are built on a standard LGB chassis, but most of it are new moulds.

Sharp lettering.

Shame about the gap between the side panels and the floor. All three cars suffer from this. Just doesn’t fit properly.

Nicely detailed doors, which do not open by the way.

Nice black steps.

A small metal step. One of them was severely bent when I unboxed one of the freight cars. It’s an easy fix, I just had to bend it back into its original shape. Still, Märklin, are you reading this?

The inside, not much to see here.

Very basic, this. The mounting points of the steps on the other side of the panel are coming through. Not very nice.

Obviously no wooden side panels, but metal. Not the model of course, that’s just ordinary plastic 🙂 .

The typical LGB two-axle chassis.

Spot the circular shape, LGB uses the same moulds for their set of cradle cars with timber load (see picture below).

Conclusion:

First of all, we should applaud LGB for their choice to finally equip all their new rolling stock (since 2013) with metal wheels. A really good choice. I wish other brands would follow. About the gondola set itself, I was pleasantly surprised. This may also have to do with the fact that I actually forgot I ordered them back in January 2013 right after they were announced… The gondola’s are nice, and I like the DR car which is different from the two HSB ones. The price seems right, certainly if you take into account that three sets of metal wheels would set you back €60 anyway. As I pointed out, the set is not flawless. One of the steps was bent (but I blame the poor packaging), and there’s a significant gap between the side panels and floor. But hey, real 1/1 scale freight cars don’t have perfect shaped panels as well 😉 .
